This type of windmill, the so-called ‘column windmill’, was once common throughout central Europe, but today only a few remain.

The origin of the mill dates back to the years 1738-1742, with its primary purpose being the milling of grain for the local inhabitants. Interestingly, the whole mill is rotating – the wooden structure stands on a central trestle in the shape of an icicle, which allowed it to rotate according to the wind. The column mill rests on a single, massive column, which is supported by four struts anchored on sleepers. The lining of the mill is covered with oak shingles on the front as additional protection against the weather. The mill
has a mechanism to adjust the four wings evenly. By means of a rod across the blade shaft, the effective area of the blades (wind resistance) can be adjusted depending on the wind strength, thus reducing the mechanical load on the overall structure.

The mill was renovated several times during the 19th century. After the Second World War, it began to deteriorate until local enthusiasts saved it from complete ruin in the 1980s. It was completely restored in 1988 and has served as a technical monument and museum ever since. In 2007 its walls were destroyed by storm Kyrill. However, the mill was restored according to its historical design.

Today the mill is a popular excursion destination. Visitors can see its functional interior, learn about traditional milling techniques and even take part in a miller’s day with craft demonstrations. Cultural events, concerts and themed tours are also sometimes held in the mill. The atmosphere of the place makes it seem as if time has stopped here. The surrounding countryside provides excellent opportunities for hiking or cycling.

The state of Thuringia lies at the heart of Germany and is often referred to as the “green heart of Germany”. It borders the states of Hesse, Bavaria, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony. One of Thuringia’s greatest natural attractions is the Thüringer Wald (Thuringian Forest), a vast mountain range with dense forests that is a paradise for hikers and skiers. The highest mountain in the mountain range and the extinct volcano Großer Beerberg can also be found there. The nearby Hainich National Park is famous for its forest, where you can walk along a raised footbridge in the treetops.

On the outskirts of the quiet village of Krippendorf, part of the city of Jena in the German state of Thuringia (Thuringia), the Bockwindmühle von Krippendorf, a historic windmill that is one of the oldest of its kind in the region, stands proudly.
