He has a urinary catheter and suffers from faecal incontinence, uses nappies, does not have dementia .His hearing is good with a hearing aid. He is completely immobile and spends most of his time in bed.He sleeps a lot.He needs to be positioned regularly and assisted with lifting. He is fully dependent on help with all basic activities, dressing, eating, personal hygiene and toileting. Hygiene is done directly in bed. Sensitivity and communication is important in care, the gentleman needs to know what is going to happen and needs to be spoken to and involved in decision making so that he feels respected. Part of the carer's job is to manage the household such as preparing meals, shopping, cleaning and looking after the laundry, as well as doing minor errands and helping with daily living. Medicines are prepared and regular use of them needs to be supervised. Supportive care is also provided by an outpatient nursing service , which comes twice a day. The gentleman lives at home with his wife (b. 1937), who does not need nursing care. However, the carer also assists with housekeeping for both of them and also creates a space for the family to take a break from caring. Night care is needed about 1 or 2 times during the night, mainly for positioning, the gentleman sleeps a lot.
