Caring for a 76 year old immobile lady, 55 kg, 165 cm, who has a stroke and cerebral haemorrhage, with right sided paralysis and dementia. She is mainly recumbent, and uses a wheelchair during the day. The lady is completely dependent on assistance for most tasks. She needs full assistance with personal hygiene, showering, dressing and toileting (a toilet chair is available). She wears incontinence pads, she is aware of the need to perform the procedure but a quick response and assistance is required. Catheter is not mentioned as permanent, but manipulation of the urinary system (voiding) is required. Transfers take place several times a day (approx. 4-5 times) between bed and wheelchair, being a more physically demanding transfer, the lady is only able to help minimally, therefore active assistance of the Caregiver is needed. The lady takes her meals independently, but needs to be supervised for regularity and medication that needs to be administered. The caregiver’s job also includes housekeeping such as cooking, shopping, cleaning and laundry care. The husband lives in the home, is self-sufficient, provides transport to doctors’ appointments and takes over night care, for example. Mental support and behavioural management are also an important part of the job; the lady tends to be restless and requires frequent attention, which can also be challenging for the family. Night work is not necessary. This is more demanding care, especially because of mobility (frequent transfers), the complete range of hygiene and the psychological burden associated with dementia. The caregiver has her own bathroom.
