Caring for an independent living 95 year old gentleman (65 kg, 170 cm) who suffers from dementia with impaired short-term memory. He often repeats himself, asks the same questions and puts things off, but has a friendly nature and is easy to direct. He moves around the home with the help of a cane and should always be accompanied when walking. He uses a walker outdoors, and needs assistance when walking up stairs. It is important to keep him active and involved in movement regularly, for example by taking him for walks. He cannot be left alone without supervision. He needs help and guidance with dressing, personal hygiene and toileting, many of which he can still do partly on his own. He is incontinent, so changing incontinence devices and supervising hygiene is part of his care. Meals are eaten independently, and supervision is needed to ensure concentration at mealtimes and regularity. The caregiver takes care of meal preparation and routine running of the household, outside help helps with cleaning and ironing twice a week, and shopping is done by the family. Supervision, companionship, communication and management of daily routines are an important part of care. Night work is not regular, the gentleman sleeps most nights, only exceptionally can he wake up. The caregiver has her own bathroom.
