| Caring for an 81 year old gentleman, 170cm, 74kg, living independently, who suffers from incontinence, Parkinson’s, heart failure, diabetes (he is on insulin), renal insufficiency and general debilitation. He has had treatment for bowel and skin cancer, suffers from polyneuropathy and incomplete paralysis. Mentally he is still fit, but his orientation is severely impaired – he does not orient himself in time, space or to persons. He is mobile in the house with a walker, but needs accompaniment and support when walking and standing. He requires assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, toileting and eating. Assistance is needed with putting on compression stockings, shaving and skin creaming if necessary. Transfers require assistance. Caregiver tasks include support with daily hygiene, preparing meals according to a diabetic plan, assistance with shopping (car), housekeeping (cleaning, laundry), social interaction, and accompanying on walks, to restaurants, or on vacation. Night work is not common but may be needed in the event of hypoglycaemia. Assistance with lifting is essential. A gardener, housekeeper and a moving guide are available for other chores. There is a car with automatic transmission. |
