Caring for an elderly lady, 70 years old, 60 kg, 165 cm, living independently, who is fully dependent on a wheelchair. The lady suffers from multiple sclerosis and is completely paralysed. She is mentally well and cooperative. She requires full transfer from bed to wheelchair and back, whereupon a glide pad is used, a hoist is not required. In bed and in the wheelchair, the lady must be positioned using pillows. She has a suprapubic (abdominal) catheter in place and wears nappies which need to be changed as needed. She is totally dependent on assistance with all hygiene, dressing, undressing, eating and drinking that needs to be given to her. Morning basic hygiene is provided by the nursing service, the rest of the care is the responsibility of the carer. The physiotherapist comes 3 – 4 times a week. Medicines are prepared, the nurse ensures their administration. The job also includes full housekeeping, including shopping, cooking, laundry, ironing, cleaning, vacuuming and garden care. Short walks in a wheelchair are possible if the weather is suitable and by arrangement. Night work is not required, only exceptionally if necessary. Care is long term and emphasises professionalism, continuity and dignity.
