Caring for an 86-year-old, 50 kg, 160 cm, independent living gentleman with dementia and Parkinson’s disease. He has severely impaired short-term memory, often repeats himself and asks the same questions at home he is still mostly oriented, outside the house he is not. He has severe motor restlessness and a tendency to walk, sometimes at night. There is also a risk of leaving the house, so supervision is needed. The gentleman moves independently without aids, but walking is unsteady and in small steps. An escort is needed when moving outside the home. He needs partial assistance with dressing and personal hygiene, needs to be prepared with clothing, reminded to change and assisted as needed. Hygiene mainly involves supervision and support with daily care, assistance with showering and getting in and out of the bath where a seat and lifting device is provided. Meals and toileting are managed independently, but regular meals and adequate fluid intake must be supervised. The job also includes housekeeping such as meal preparation, shopping, cleaning and laundry care. Shops are accessible on foot. Creating daily structure, companionship and activity such as walking together, listening to music, singing or looking at photographs is an important part of care. The gentleman is provided with a GPS device. Nocturnal restlessness is addressed medically. No night care is not needed; although the gentleman walks around the house at night, the caregiver does not need to get up.
