| Caring for an 88-year-old independent living lady, 85 kg, 180 cm, suffering from incipient dementia, incontinence and oncological disease – bowel cancer, for which she regularly goes to the hospital for treatment. She does not have dementia. She moves around the home independently with the help of a cane, but her gait is unsteady, so caution is needed. Outside the house, an escort is necessary. She does not need help getting up and lifting is not necessary. She is independent when dressing and eating, but needs partial assistance with toileting and personal hygiene, especially with hygiene after using the toilet, changing incontinence aids and showering (assistance with getting in and out, supervision and support). It is important to ensure sufficient fluid intake and regularity of meals. Medicines are prepared and regular use should be ensured. The carer’s job also includes managing the household, such as preparing meals, shopping, cleaning and taking care of laundry, or accompanying the family to medical appointments or running errands. Compression stockings are provided by the outpatient nursing service. Companionship, talking and maintaining a daily routine, as well as safe supervision with activities of daily living are important parts of care. Night work is not necessary, although the lady may be restless at night, the carer does not need to get up. |
