Care for an independent living 56-year-old gentleman, 90 kg, 172 cm, who is mostly recumbent and suffers from multiple sclerosis, has a catheter in place and is wheelchair-bound. Mentally he is fully orientated, appears slightly depressed and has a rather more dominant nature. The gentleman is completely dependent on assistance with all basic tasks, he is fully dependent on a Caregiver for dressing, hygiene and toilet use. He requires complete grooming, including feeding, and takes liquids through a straw. Care also includes transfer from bed to wheelchair using a hoist, manipulation when transferring to the toilet or shower, changing incontinence aids and emptying the catheter. The health service comes 3 times a week for showering, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are done at home 1-2 times a week. Care also includes companionship, communication and ensuring the gentleman is not alone for long periods of time. Accompaniment for walks or shopping approximately twice a week is also expected. The job also includes housekeeping such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, taking out the trash and general care of the running of the household. Night work is required as and when required, approximately 3 times a week once a night when the gentleman is restless and calls for a Caregiver. He uses a cannabis based medicated spray to calm him down. A complete transfer is required when handling, the gentleman is unable to actively assist. The home has a reclining bed, patient hoist and bath hoist.
