Caring for an independent living elderly gentleman, 69 years old, 70 kg, 190 cm, who is bedridden, has terminal lung cancer and is in palliative care. After a three-week coma, he is extremely debilitated and currently has almost no muscle strength. He is in bed most of the time and has to be positioned regularly. Sometimes he can stand for short periods of time, but only with firm restraint. On rare occasions he can be moved to a toilet seat, otherwise he uses a support bowl or diapers. Requires complete assistance with all activities of daily living. He is completely dependent on assistance with personal hygiene, dressing and undressing, toileting and positioning. He takes his meals with partial assistance. General basic care is needed, including meal preparation, shopping, cleaning, laundry and care of household animals. The gentleman uses an oxygen machine. If there are any breathing problems, it is essential to contact the palliative care team immediately, so a good knowledge of German is essential. Night work is not planned. Lifting and full transfer are required. Should his condition improve slightly, transfer to a wheelchair or toilet chair may be temporarily possible.
