Caring for an 83-year-old lady, 80 kg, 162 cm, who is confined to a wheelchair after two strokes. She has recently undergone major gall bladder surgery and has been physically debilitated since then. She can only partially co-operate with transfer to a wheelchair for the time being, but is expected to gradually improve. The lady is oriented, has diabetes, osteoporosis, heart problems and general old age weakness. She needs regular assistance with physical hygiene, dressing and undressing, accompanying to the toilet, as well as incontinence care (she wears diapers). Medication use needs to be monitored and prepared, with medication being triaged by nursing. In the home, the caregiver is also expected to manage the household such as cleaning, laundry, cooking and preparing meals. Shopping is done by the husband, as there is no grocery shopping within walking distance and the nearest town is 10 km away. Help may be needed at night, usually once a night, especially with toileting. Physical lifting is not necessary. Two people live in the household. The husband (86 years old) is self-sufficient and does not need care, the Caregiver’s role is only to take care of the wife and run the household. The caregiver has her own bathroom.
