Caring for an 89 year old lady, 75 kg, 165 cm, who lives independently, is severely limited in mobility, uses a wheelchair and is unable to walk. She can only stand up briefly and even then with great difficulty. Transfers from bed to wheelchair and to the toilet are not possible independently and require assistance, approximately 5 times a day. The lady suffers from general old-age weakness. After a gastro-intestinal illness and hospitalization, she is even more weak and has difficulty walking. She is developing incipient dementia,her eyesight is severely impaired to the point of near blindness. She is incontinent of both urine and stool and uses diapers that are changed by a caregiver. The lady needs help with personal hygiene, intimate care, dressing and transfers. She is independent when eating but food needs to be prepared and served. She needs to be checked regularly on her drinking regime and reminded of her medication. The caregiver’s duties also include housekeeping and include cooking, cleaning, laundry, ironing and shopping (shops can be reached on foot in about 8-10 min). There is also a small dog living in the household that needs to be looked after. She is friendly, easy-going and sociable by nature and enjoys conversation and television. A communicative caregiver who will attend to her and not leave her alone is expected. Relatives come to visit every 2 weeks. Night work is needed only occasionally, especially help with toileting. There is a nursing bed, a toilet chair and a bath hoist. The caregiver has her own bathroom.
