| Caring for a 90-year-old elderly lady, 52 kg, 145 cm, who moves independently at home with a cane, needs a walker for longer journeys. She can walk up the stairs with assistance, gets up without help, no lifting required. She rarely goes out of the house. She has dementia/Alzheimer’s and has developed transient confusion after overcoming pneumonia. Short term memory is deteriorating, she often believes she has lost things when she has only moved them. She has no speech impairment, is not aggressive. Her hearing is impaired, she wears a hearing aid. She suffers from thyroid disease, has heart problems, is short of breath and has edema. Compression stockings are worn by the nursing service. She needs help with dressing and hygiene, but can manage most of it on her own. Help is also needed to get in and out of the shower; a shower chair is available. She eats independently and eats with her family. She follows a low-iodine diet, it is important to monitor her fluid intake (max. 1.5-2 litres per day). The caregiver takes care of cooking, laundry, cleaning and small shopping. Drug therapy is provided, medication is prepared by the family. The doctor visits the lady at home. It is important to supervise her daily routine, spend time with her, provide companionship and conversation. In her free time she likes to spend time in the garden. Nocturnal care is not needed. She lives at home with her husband (88 years old), she has prostate cancer with bone metastases, but does not currently require regular care. For the caregiver, housekeeping for both is a consideration. The garden does not need to be maintained. There is a car with manual transmission. |
