From lantern legends to wine tastings

There are some places that win visitors over before they even set foot in them, and Heppenheim is undoubtedly one of them. From afar, this picturesque Hessian town beckons with its vineyards, castle-like silhouette and an atmosphere in which time seems to slow down.

The picturesque German town of Heppenheim lies in southern Hesse, in the Bergstraße region, just below the slopes of the Odenwald. This peaceful corner of the countryside is surrounded by vineyards, which complete its romantic panorama and give it a unique wine character. Its history dates back to the Romans and the Frankish kingdom, as archaeological finds and written records from as early as 755 attest. The town, which has around 28 000 inhabitants, boasts a well-preserved historic centre with around six hectares of old streets and houses with typical wooden decoration. The dominant feature of the village is the Starkenburg, a massive castle ruin on the Schlossberg, from where there is a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. In the town square, the wooden town hall buildings and the fountain of the Virgin Mary – Marienbrunnen, which together create a charming setting. St. Peter’s Church, often referred to as the “Bergstraße House”, attracts visitors with its grandeur – although it is not a real cathedral, its size and significance are symbolic for the city. To experience the city’s special atmosphere, join organised night walks through its streets, which are enriched by the so-called Laternenweg (lantern procession) – a hiking route where lantern silhouettes tell old Hessian legends.

Nature lovers will be impressed by the Heppenheim Arboretum, which covers more than five hectares and hides more than 200 species of native and exotic trees. The town is also known for its very favourable climate – the Bergstraße is one of the warmer and sunnier areas with an attractive flowering season. On the hills above the town, winegrowers cultivate mainly white wine varieties and the area is one of the important wine-growing regions of Germany. The surrounding area still offers a wealth of hiking trails, viewpoints and cycle paths.

Heppenheim is the type of destination that can charm with both tranquillity and rich cultural tradition, with its historic streets, the smell of wine and the panoramas of the Bergstraße creating an environment that visitors love to return to.
