Have you measured your blood pressure at home and were surprised by the numbers? In reality, however, one measurement – especially if it’s not taken correctly – may tell you almost nothing about your health. Blood pressure is sensitive to stress, movement, coffee, talking or incorrect body position. That’s why it happens that the first measurement is not relevant, and after repeating it in the right conditions, the values are within the norm. Not because the person has “miraculously recovered”, but because he measured correctly.
Correct measurement of blood pressure is as important as its value. In fact, the wrong measurement can create a false problem – and unnecessary worry. How to measure blood pressure correctly at home:
1) Calm before measuring – Before measuring, sit down and rest for at least 5 minutes. Avoid coffee, smoking, nicotine and physical exertion just before the measurement. The body needs time to “calm down”.
2) Correct sitting posture – Sit comfortably; the back should be against the chair, shoulders relaxed, feet flat on the ground and not crossed.
3) Correct hand and cuff position – Support your arm so that it is at heart level. The cuff should be the correct size, worn on the bare shoulder, not over clothing, and should not press or be too loose.
4) Do not move or talk during the measurement – at the same time, breathe naturally, do not contract your muscles and do not watch the measurement. Even minor tension can increase the pressure.
5) Repeat the measurement – Measure blood pressure at least twice – repeat the second measurement after 1-2 minutes, write down the average of the readings and note the time and circumstances of the measurement.
Save these steps and refer back to them whenever you take your blood pressure at home. Your health deserves accurate readings, not jumping to conclusions 🍀
