Between walls and vineyards: the story of Meersburg

Imagine a town that seems to have fallen out of a fairy tale book, views of the glistening surface of Lake Constance, and above it an old castle that keeps a watchful eye over the whole area. Meersburg will charm you on arrival and you won’t want to go back to reality.

It is located in south-western Germany, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, right on the northern shore of Lake Constance, just a short drive from the famous city of Friedrichshafen. The lakeside location alone, with views of the Swiss Alps, makes Meersburg a special place that will win you over with its peaceful yet lively atmosphere.

The town is especially famous for its ancient castle – the Alte Burg, which is considered one of the oldest inhabited castles in Germany. Nearby is also the Neues Schloss, a Baroque residence with richly decorated rooms and views of the lake. However, the town also attracts visitors with its extensive vineyards that stretch along the slopes above the lake. In fact, Meersburg is known as a wine-growing village and boasts local white wine varieties such as Müller-Thurgau.

A walk through the city centre leads through stone staircases and mysterious passageways, passing small cafés and galleries, creating an unrepeatable atmosphere. On the lakeside promenade you can have a coffee overlooking the water and watch the ferries that connect Meersburg with Konstanz on the opposite shore. Not far from Meersburg is the island of Mainau, known as the ‘flower island’, which enchants thousands of visitors every year with its gardens, exotic plants and romantic nooks and crannies.

If you crave romance, beautiful views, culture and relaxation all in one, Meersburg is the right choice. Just come once – and it will remain in your memories forever.
