Looking for a place that has the charm of Tuscany, the atmosphere of Venice and the tranquillity of the German countryside? Welcome to Saarburg – a small town with a big soul, where the smell of wine meets the sound of a waterfall.
Saarburg is located in the west of Germany in the Federal Republic of Rhineland-Palatinate, in the district of Trier-Saarburg. Geographically, it lies in the upper reaches of the Saar river, in a steeply incised valley with vineyards, forests and slopes, in an area also known as the ‘Saar-Obermosel’. The town is surrounded by vineyards, steep wooded slopes and the river Saar itself, which meanders past the town centre. The sloping terrain gives the place a southern, welcoming character.
The biggest attraction of the town is undoubtedly the waterfall in the middle of the historic centre – the Leukbach stream falls from a height of almost 20 metres between the old houses and creates an unforgettable backdrop. Nearby you will find the old mills, now converted into the Amüseum Museum, where you can learn about the history of the crafts that shaped the life of the town. The old Altstadt, with its colourful fishermen’s houses with original shop signs on their facades, is a reminder of the days of fishermen and craftsmen. Nearby is the Mabilon bell-making workshop, which from the 18th century onwards produced bells for churches all over the world. Today it serves as an interactive museum and cultural centre.
One of the most photographed places, besides the waterfall falling directly between the houses, is the ruins of the Saarburg Castle from 964. From its walls, you have a magnificent view of the Saar valley and the vineyards where the famous Riesling, the wine that made the whole region famous, is aged. In addition to the monuments, there is also a spiritual site – the pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary in the Beurig district, where the miraculous image of the Madonna and Child has been venerated for more than 700 years.
Saarburg is the ideal destination for those looking for peace, authenticity and tranquillity. In the surroundings you can take bike tours along the Saar River, boat trips or hikes among the vineyards with local wine tasting.
