Discover the magic of the German ossuary

Imagine a city where the morning mist hovers over the lake, the streets breathe history and every corner invites you to slow down. In Constance, right on the border with Switzerland, you’ll find a unique combination of culture, nature and gastronomy, set in a breathtaking landscape.

The city of Konstanz (Konstanz) is located in the south of Baden-Württemberg, right on the shores of Lake Constance (Bodensee), making it an important transport and tourist point in the region. Constance is famous not only for its beautiful old town, but also as the site of the Council of Constance, during which the Czech reformer Jan Hus was burnt at the stake. This is still commemorated by the monument and the Hus House in the centre of the town. History buffs will enjoy the monumental Münster Cathedral (St. Mary’s Cathedral), which witnessed these dramatic events. The cathedral bears traces of various architectural styles – from Romanesque to Gothic – and its tower offers a beautiful view of the city and the lake.

One of the most interesting facts is that the town escaped bombing during World War II by keeping its lights on at night to blend in with neighbouring Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Thanks to this, the old centre with its beautiful medieval half-timbered houses has been preserved to this day, forming the unique colour of the town. Each house has its own character, wooden beams, ornaments and atmosphere.

The city is home to the University of Konstanz, a prestigious institution that ranks among Germany’s most important universities. Nature and peace lovers will enjoy a stroll along the promenade or a boat trip on Lake Constance, which forms the natural border between Germany, Switzerland and Austria and offers views of the snow-capped Alps. The famous island of Mainau, a floral paradise with subtropical plants and a butterfly pavilion belonging to the noble Bernadotte family, is also close to Constance. The surrounding countryside is dotted with vineyards and cycling trails, and hiking enthusiasts can explore the nearby Hegau mountain range with its extinct volcanoes.

Kostnica will enchant you in every season – in spring it blooms, in summer it attracts you to the water, in autumn it plays with colours and in winter it offers a peaceful atmosphere with Christmas markets.
