“Florence on the Elbe River”

Are you longing for a trip to a city that breathes history, but at the same time lives in the present? In addition to its historical treasures, Dresden also offers a modern impulse. This German city, located just a short distance from the Czech-German border, captivates visitors with its elegance, its turbulent past and its welcoming atmosphere.

In the heart of Saxony, a state in the east of Germany, lies the majestic city of Dresden, rightly one of Europe’s most beautiful historic cities. The city is divided by the Elbe River, which rises in the Czech Republic and flows through the German countryside to the North Sea. Along its banks, you’ll find architectural gems as well as quiet corners of nature. The best view of it is offered by the iconic Augustusbrücke stone bridge, which connects the Old and New Towns.

The bridge is one of the symbols of Dresden. Its origins date back to the 12th century and it has undergone several reconstructions throughout its history. Today, it is not only an important thoroughfare, but also a place with a view of the Dresden skyline, dominated by another pride of the city – the Baroque Frauenkirche church.

The majestic church was destroyed during World War II and stood as a ruin for decades. After the reunification of Germany, it was faithfully restored and reopened in 2005. It is a symbol of reconciliation and spiritual renewal for the entire region and is considered one of the largest sandstone buildings in the world. It also boasts one of the most stunning stone church domes north of the Alps.

The impressive Zwinger Baroque Palace with its art galleries, fountains and gardens is also close by and attracts thousands of visitors. Among them, the Old Masters Gallery stands out, with works by Raphael and Rembrandt.

A unique romantic atmosphere is offered by a cruise along the Elbe River on a historic steamboat. Nature lovers will find themselves just a few kilometres from the city, where the Saxon Switzerland National Park with its breathtaking views and rock formations is located.
